Facebook Events: The basics

Facebook EventsFacebook Events are among the most underused Facebook features.  You can access the relevant Facebook Events help section, but it only shows you one way to create an event.

There are two more ways to set up an event.  You can:
a)      Create your event and post about it right from your Status field

This type of set up results in a post on your Timeline – not the most effective way to make sure your event goes viral
b)      Set up an App for your event from your Page Admin Panel

  • Click “Edit Page”
  • Click “Update Public Info”
  • Choose “More” and select “Apps”
    Facebook Apps
  • Choose the “Events” App from the selection of tabs that opens up

(Note that it will automatically use your most recent event as the Tab cover photo)

  • Click on “Add App” and enter your event information

Using events to grow your business, however, is all about creating buzz. So setting up an App tab for your event is a must – and do keep people updated about your event in your Posts.  (Remember to ask them to share the news!)
Types of Events You Can Create
Another factor to consider: The best type of events for your business.
If you have any clout at all in your industry or niche, a Networking Event can be a strong draw. You can promote any format for your event:

  • Twitter party
  • Google+ Hangout
  • Webinar
  • Online talk show phone-in
  • Teleseminar
  • Blog party
  • Local, in-person workshop

You can invite guest experts and present it as a panel or round-table discussion.
You can invite members of your audience.
In short, present it in whatever format you think your target attendee would find the most appealing.
Another type of popular event: A Product Launch event.  This can encompass physical or digital products, and can be presented as a Book Launch, if you have a book (digital or physical) to sell.
Create a hashtag for each event and ask people to share it.
Attending Events
But you don’t need to only create Facebook Events to grow your business. Be sure to attend relevant industry events as well!
If you want significant peers and experts to attend, guest or join in your events, attend theirs.  And don’t just click the button to signify you’re attending – leave a note guaranteed to make their followers and your fellow peers sit up and take notice.
Attend and contribute – that’s great free publicity for your own business.
