Marketing Trends from 2014 – What were the flops?

Marketing Trends Auto Posting Hit Virtual assistantsAccording to an article, Five Marketing Trends that Didn’t Go Well in 2014 by Ran Avrahamy on Entrepreneur.com the following trends were flops.  While they were predicted to be “must haves” for online marketing, it turned out the return on investment (ROI) was not positive.

  1. QR Codes
  2. Auto Posting
  3. Viral Videos
  4. Over Optimizing
  5. Responsive Web Design

You can read the article to get Mr. Avrahamy’s view on all five.  Here I would like to address auto posting and how to use it so it will work.
Auto posting is used by many online marketers to save time.  It makes it quick and easy to post the same message across multiple social-media networks.  A problem arises because each social network serves its own unique purpose and attracts a unique audience. Your post on Facebook would probably not be appropriate for LinkedIn or Twitter.  While your topic may be the same or very similar, you need to tailor the message to the network you’re posting to.
So how do you do this while still using time savers like auto posting?  It’s not that difficult, really.  You just customize the post for each network while conveying the same information. Here is an example or the same post written slightly different for 4 of the most popular social networks:

Even if your subscription offer can be cancelled at any time, people are often weary of getting hooked into a subscription of something they’re unsure of. You can offer a free or a very low-cost trial to try it out. My recommendation is to still have the subscriber commit to a subscription after the trial period is over and to let them know they have a full XXX days to try it out and can cancel anytime. That will help you convert more trial users into happy clients. If they are left with the responsibility of renewing their membership manually, in many cases, they probably won’t bother. Of course, you can test out both methods and see what produces the best results.[/box]

So you get the idea.  All of these message deliver the same information but they are formatted to a specific network.  If you are using an auto posting service such as Hootsuite it only takes another minute to add the customized posts.
What marketing trends worked for you in 2014?  Which ones just weren’t worth your time?  Let me know in the comments!
