Guest Blogging: What’s In It for the Host?

Guest Blogging HIT Virtual AssistantsAs with many of my post ideas, this post evolved from a client question.  It was “What are your thoughts on accepting guest contributors?” After answering the email, I decided to share with my blog readers who may have the same question.  Naturally, I did a quick Google search to see what others were saying on the topic.  I was surprised at what I found.
Guest blogging is a method used by bloggers to increase blog traffic where bloggers write posts to be published on other bloggers’ blogs. There has been a lot written about it regarding its validity and usefulness.  However, one thing I noticed is that almost all the articles are from the “guests” point of view.  Topics such as will this help my SEO, is it a good tactic for building my list etc.  What seems to be lacking is discussion about what’s in it for the host?
Guest blogging is said to be one of the best techniques for internet marketing for the “guest”. The primary benefit for the host is Extended Reach. The guest blogger will be sharing his post on your blog with his ‘tribe.’  Hopefully, while they visit your site to read the post, they will find something of interest to make them stay and check you out.  You gain another prospect.
Of course don’t overlook the fact that having a guest blog occasionally will give you a break from writing!
Here are some tips to using guest blogs:

  • Take a look at who is asking to guest blog. Check him/her out. Visit their site, check Alexa rankings, social media profiles etc.  While you may want to help a newbie out occasionally, remember your benefit is coming from exposure to the guests’ list. If they don’t have one, you get zilch. Actually, you end up paying because you have put your time (or your assistants) into establishing the guest blogger relationship.
  • The guest bloggers should offer complimentary services – not be your competitor. An example is if you offer branding services you may have a guest blogger who specializes in search engine optimization. You serve the same audience but with complimentary services.
  • Look at the relationship as you would a JV Partnership.  Set down some guidelines/rules.  Yes, in writing. This doesn’t have to be a notarized ten page document. Simply set out some rules of engagement and have everyone sign that they agree.
  • Limit your guest posts. It still needs to be YOUR blog. Your visitors are coming to read what you have to say and one of your goals for your blog is to establish credibility. If your thoughts are drowned out by your guests, it will defeat the purpose.

What are your thoughts on guest blogging?  Have you had good or bad experiences as the host? Let me know in the comments!
